Accessibility

Accessibility Statement

Digital Promise's Learner Variability Project team is dedicated to ensuring that all users can access and achieve their goals when using the Learner Variability Navigator web app. We acknowledge that our site currently has features and content that are not fully conformant to WCAG 2.1 AA standards, and we are working daily to improve the accessibility and overall usability of the site.

Measures to support accessibility

The Learner Variability Project team takes the following measures to improve the accessibility of the Learner Variability Navigator:

  • Include accessibility as part of our equity statement.
  • Include accessibility throughout our design and vendor policies.
  • Appoint a team member to serve as an accessibility ombudsperson.
  • Provide accessibility training and resources for our staff.
  • Partner with accessibility-focused organizations and neurodiverse leaders
  • Conduct ongoing accessibility evaluations internally and with external vendors, both automated and manually, including testing with assistive technology.
  • Build accessibility review periods into all design sprints and code refactoring efforts

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. Learner Variability Navigator is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard. We are implementing a plan to update the Learner Variability Navigator’s conformance with standards, as well as update the design to uphold a higher standard for inclusive design.

  • HTML
  • WAI-ARIA
  • CSS
  • JavaScript

These technologies are relied upon for conformance with the accessibility standards used.

Limitations and alternatives

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility of Learner Variability Navigator, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations, and potential solutions. Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed below:

  1. User generated pages, like workspaces, with user generated content may not have accessible text, image, and video content, as people creating workspaces may not be fully aware of accessibility standards.

Assessment approach

Digital Promise's Learner Variability Project Team assessed the accessibility of Learner Variability Navigator by the following approaches:

  • External evaluation from:
    • Web Savvy Services, a program of the Ontario College of Arts and Design University, or OCADU;
    • Concentric Sky, a software design and development company; and
    • Echo & Co, a software design and development company
  • Internal evaluation using the WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool.

Evaluation report

An accessibility evaluation report for the Learner Variability Navigator is available for review and feedback.

This is our homepage. You can access many of the features of the Navigator here, and learn more about how learner variability intersects with topics in education and learning. To start, select a content area – we call them Learner Models – to visit a factor map.

Factor Map pages show factor connections

Factor maps show research-based concepts, "factors," that likely impact learning. They are organized into four categories: Learner Background, Social and Emotional Learning, Cognition, and Content Area. The map is interactive. Move your cursor over a factor to see connected factors. Select any factor to visit its summary page. We'll look at factor summary pages next.

Learn more about factors and research-based strategies that support them

This is a factor summary page. It provides a brief definition and review of the factor, a factor connections diagram, additional resources, and strategies that support this factor. On the strategy card, the multi-colored boxes show all the factors that it supports. Select a strategy to visit its summary page.

Strategy summary pages give more detail about ways to support learner variability

Strategy summary pages have an overview, information about using the strategy in different learning environments, resources of interest, the factors this strategy supports, and related strategies you can explore. To view all the strategies in a content area, use the strategies tab at the top of the page. We'll look at all the Strategies for this learner model next.

Learner model strategy pages let you filter all strategies for that model

The strategy page shows ALL of the strategies for that learner model. You can select factors of interest for you or your learners, and it will narrow the strategies to only those that match all of the factors selected. This makes it easy to find key strategies to better design for learner variability. Again, select the strategy name to visit its summary page.

What Is Learner Variability?

Learner variability is the recognition that each learner is a unique constellation of strengths and challenges that are interconnected across the whole child. Understanding these connections and how they vary according to context is essential for meeting the needs of each learner.

It disrupts the notion of a one-size-fits all education. Understanding learner variability helps educators embrace both students’ struggles and strengths as we connect practice to uplifting the whole learner.

Throughout the site, we talk about "factors" and "strategies." Factors are concepts research suggests have an impact on how people learn. Strategies are the approaches to teaching and learning that can be used to support people in how they learn best.

What Is Learner Variability?

Learner variability is the recognition that each learner is a unique constellation of strengths and challenges that are interconnected across the whole child. Understanding these connections and how they vary according to context is essential for meeting the needs of each learner. It embraces both students’ struggles and strengths. It considers the whole child.

The Learner Variability Navigator is a free, online tool that translates the science of learner variability into factor maps and strategies that highlight connections across the whole learner. This puts the science of learning at teachers' fingertips,  empowering them to understand their own practice and support each learner.
