Inhibition, a component of executive functioning, is the ability to suppress Attention to irrelevant input and to focus on pertinent stimuli or information. Inhibition is essential for Self-Regulation, enabling students to regulate their thoughts and actions. Students use these skills to successfully pay attention to lessons and solve problems. Some students, including those with ADHD or learning disabilities such dyslexia and dyscalculia, may have more difficulty using inhibitory control to support their focus and learning, particularly in reading and math. By helping students adjust both their focus and their behavior, Inhibition can support early math skill development and is critical to becoming a successful math student.

Strategy summary pages have an overview, information about using the strategy in different learning environments, resources of interest, the factors this strategy supports, and related strategies you can explore. To view all the strategies in a content area, use the strategies tab at the top of the page. We'll look at all the Strategies for this learner model next.
