Gallery Walk
Overview
As students walk through stations working in small groups, the social and physical nature of the learning supports deeper understanding. By seeing, sharing, and responding to math problems or concepts with their peers, students are actively engaged in Math Communication that can develop their Mathematical Flexibility and support moving new learning into Long-term Memory.
Example: Use This Strategy in the Classroom
Watch how this high school teacher facilitates her a gallery walk, including discussing math thinking and reasoning. Groups of students rotate through four different stations to solve equations. During the rotations, students seek help from one another and the teacher and use their interactive notebook resources, all of which support the development of their Math Communication and their deeper understanding of different problem-solving strategies.
